Our selection of the best Christmas markets to visit in Budapest
Christmas Market at Vörösmarty Square
Where: Vörösmarty tér, Budapest.
This square is the beating heart of Pest, located at the crossroads of some of the most important shopping streets. That’s why it also hosts one of the most popular Christmas markets every year. Among the wooden stalls, you will find fragrant food prepared in large iron pans and hot drinks. But don’t miss the famous kürtöskalács, which we prefer filled with chocolate. Here, you should also try the renowned goulash, as well as sausages and roast meat.
Christmas market among fashion street shops
Where: Deák Ferenc u., Budapest.
This market opened a few years ago on “Fashion Street,” which connects the two main squares in the center of Pest and is set directly in front of the windows of some of the most famous fashion chains. Pass by here if you want to move from Vörösmarty Square to Erzsébet Square or if you’re looking to make new purchases.
Erzsébet Square – Christmas Market
Where: Erzsébet tér, Budapest.
This square is one of the busiest areas of the city, situated on the border between the nightlife district (Jewish Quarter) and the shopping area in the center of Pest. The Erzsébet Square Christmas Market is an excellent stop if you’re just passing through and want to grab a bite to eat. Be sure to try some strudel or mulled wine and coffee here. If you want to see the city from above, you can do so thanks to the Ferris wheel that’s open all year round.
Christmas Fair at St. Stephen’s Basilica
Where: Szent István tér, Budapest.
This is probably Budapest’s most famous and photographed Christmas market. Here, you will walk directly on the marble floor in front of the majestic St. Stephen’s Basilica. In the middle of the square, you will also find a small skating rink and light shows in the evening. Prices are slightly higher than average, but the spectacle is guaranteed. Try some of the most famous Hungarian foods here, such as Csabai salami. Don’t miss one of the most renowned alcoholic drinks, the pálinka, and the krampampuli, best enjoyed piping hot.
Cultural Festival and Fair at Városháza Park
Where: Károly krt., Budapest.
Those interested in discovering Hungarian folklore and traditions should visit this location. It is undoubtedly one of the best Christmas markets to visit in Budapest due to its consistently lively atmosphere that engages visitors. In addition to typical Christmas stalls, you can watch traditional dances and participate in courses to learn your first moves. It is also here that the city’s tallest Christmas tree is displayed every year.
Christmas market at Buda castle
Where: Ybl Miklós tér 2-6, Budapest.
In the restored gardens of Budapest Castle, a Christmas market is set up that differs from those on the Pest side and perhaps possesses a more authentic spirit. The few stalls may not offer the most varied food that you will find in other parts of the city, but you can admire the Hungarian capital and the majestic Danube River from an elevated vantage point.
Christmas market in City Park
Where: Vajdahunyad stny., Budapest.
The City Park will immerse you in the charm of an old-fashioned Christmas. Set up near the iconic Heroes’ Square, it is also close to the Gothic Vajdahunyad Castle and a large skating rink that opens every year on the surface of a frozen lake. The lights of the street lamps and the long shadows of the trees in the evening make this place unique and definitely worth a visit.
Gozsdu Court Christmas Fair
Where: Király u. 13, Budapest.
Gozsdu Court is a passage that connects the center of Budapest’s nightlife district. During the day, you will find stalls and typical products, and in the evening, the entertainment and music of the many bars overlooking this narrow corridor nestled between the Art Deco-style houses. If you are ready for some action, this is the place you’re looking for.
Óbuda Christmas Market
Where: Fö Tér, Budapest.
In Óbuda, you will find one of the best Christmas markets to visit in Budapest because it is far from the most touristy areas and has retained a more authentic spirit. Here, you will find handmade objects and all the above-mentioned traditional foods, and perhaps a sense of calm that no longer exists elsewhere. Definitely recommended, especially if you are with family.
Bálna – Advent Festival
Where: Fővám tér 11-12, Budapest.
Although located slightly outside the most central area, we still suggest you visit this market. Why? For the skating rink in front of the Danube, offering a view of the illuminated castle in the evening. Or perhaps because of the excellent beers and drinks offered by the breweries, which are usually crowded with young people and students. The Bálna Christmas market may not be very sumptuous, but it is certainly unique and perfect for those who just want to spend a pleasant evening.
